Jimmy Bruen Victory by Templemore V Tipperary Town.

Saturday 28^th. May 2022. Congratulations to team Captain Declan Russell, Vice Captains Dermot Cooper, Donal Hayes and to all the team in a 3/2 win over Tipperary Town in Templemore. It was a glorious day for golf and all the sweeter with a victory for Templemore with a very competitive new team. Team; John McGrath, Caran Hassett , Johnny Coleman, Cathal Leahy, Mark Stakelum, Ewan Scott, Ned Delaney, Martin Gleeson, Philip Ryan (jnr), Timothy Tuohy, Keith Morris, Shane Russell. Next round V Clonmel in Templemore time and date to be confirmed.

The Jimmy Bruen Shield.

The Jimmy Bruen Shield was inaugurated to commemorate the late Jimmy Bruen of Muskerry Golf Club who inspired the British & Irish Team to their first win in the Walker Cup at St. Andrews in 1938. Jimmy was only 18-years old at the time and a schoolboy at the Presentation Brothers. He won the British Amateur Championship in 1946 and many other National Championships, before an injury brought a premature end to his illustrious amateur carrier. Jimmy was renowned for his distance off the tee before technology was even dreamt about. No doubt about the achievements of this great golfer.

Pierce Purcell Shield V Cahir

18^th. May. Our Pierce Purcell team was defeated by Cahir this evening in Cahir. Tommy Foley Captain expressed a great thanks to the players and panel for their efforts. Thanks to John Galvin for his assistance, and to our supporters who travelled with us. Tommy also congratulated the Cahir Team in their success and wished then all the success in the tournament. Templemore Team. Denis Maher, Padraig Moloney, Tom McGrath, Michael Delaney, Declan Russell, Jerome Ryan, Andy Purcell, Mick Keely, Michael Purcell, Paul Touhy. The subs were Denis Touhy, John Hassett, Ambrose Purcell and Cathal Leahy.

The Pierce Purcell Shield.

Inaugurated in 1970 the Pierce Purcell Shield is in commemoration of Professor Pierce Purcell one of the great administrators of Irish golf from the 1920, to the 1950’s. The format is five teams of Foursomes playing of a combined handicap of 27 and the minimum handicap being 12.

J B Carr Tournament Victory for Templemore V Nenagh.

Congratulations again to John Stapleton (The Saint) and his team in a progressive victory over Nenagh in Nenagh with a 3/2 win. On Friday 20^th. May. The next round will be versus Nenagh in Templemore on Monday 30^th. May. This return leg is for the County Championship title having previous victory over Dundrum and Clonmel.

The J.B.Carr Tournament.

The J.B. Carr Diamond Trophy was inaugurated by Woodenbridge Golf Club in 1996. In 2018 Templemore were narrowly defeated by Portumna Golf Club. A fantastic event in the Avoca Vally. This popular event has effectively become the Senior Club Championship of Ireland (Over 60’s) with some 200 or so clubs from every corner of Ireland participating. The semi-finals and finals are held each year in Woodenbridge Golf Club, usually over the second weekend of September.

Fred Perry Trophy Victory for Templemore.

Congratulations to Leam Leahy and his team in a decisive victory over Clonmel in Clonmel with a 4/1 win. On Thursday 4^th. May. The next round will be versus Thurles at home in Templemore. The Team; Dinny Maher, Padraigh Moloney, Ger Clifford, Declan Russell, Tom McGrath, Ambrose Purcell, Seamus Bourke, Joe Fahy, Dinny Touhy, Bertie Keane.

Fred Perry Championship.

An inter-club four-ball championship for teams of 10 players, all of whom must be over 55, was named in honor of the former GUI President and Connacht Branch stalwart who served with distinction on the West of Ireland Championship Committee for 42 years before his death on March 3, 2018. Fred Perry guided generations of Irish golfers through the highs and lows of championship golf. “Fred was a one off,” says former GUI President John Moloughney. “He was committed to golf and the ethos of the game. He was a father figure in Irish golf.” His immense stature stemmed from his unparalleled commitment to the game.

Doonbeg Social Competition.

There is great appreciation to Tommy Foley and his team in organising this Social Golf Day for the members of Templemore Golf Club in Doonbeg. Tommy expressed thanks to Tom and Kevin Kenny for their help. Special thanks also to John Stapelton for his assistance. The results were. 4^th. Matty Stapleton, 3^rd. Bertie Keane, 2^nd. Paudie Butler, and in first place, Ger Clifford. Presentation of prizes at the club house in Templemore.

Unfortunately, due to the continuous inclement weather resulting in intermitting closures of the course it was not possible to continue with competitions. As soon as possible all competitions will be back to normal.

“Golf is a game for everyone – for enjoyment, for health, for life”, is the Vision of the Strategic Plan, with five focus areas set out throughout the Strategy. The 2022 Golf Ireland schedule will see increased opportunities for men, women, boys and girls to compete together in National Championships.
