News up to Sunday 12th August

Templemore Golf Club News;

Templemore Golf club Victorious Munster Title;

The final leg of the “Munster Title” was played in Templemore  last Friday 10th August.  This great Templemore team had a clean sweep win 5-0 against “Cork South, Mahon Golf Club”.  It was a glorious day for golf and the course was in magnificent shape.  The Mahon Team and supporters arrived in great numbers and created a sight to behold of red and white.  A wonderful spectacle not seen in the history of Templemore Golf Club.  The semi-final will be played in Woodenbridge Golf Course on  Saturday 1st. September and the final and playoff for 3rd. and 4th. will be on Sunday 2nd. September.   The Clubs remaining in the competition are;  K-Club- V- Royal Dublin, Portumna, Ballybofey and Templemore.

The following is a unique account captured on the running of play by Templemore Golf Club Communication Secretary, Martin Bohan;

Templemore are J B Carr Munster Champions after an epic encounter;  Trailing 4 to 1 after the first leg in Mahon the previous week. Templemore entered the second leg with a degree of confidence, feeling that the 4-1 was not a true reflection of the gap between the teams.  Manager Liam Leahy retained his tried and trusted pairings, just juggling their placing in the order of play.  From the onset, Templemore were on the front foot and after 2 holes they were up in 2 matches and level in 3.  With 6 played, Templemore were up in 3 even in 1 and down in 1, consequently a glimmer of hope.  At half way, the game had tilted more in favour of the home team, the first pairing Ml. Keely\ Ambrose Purcell were 1 up, match 2 had Seamus Bourke \ Liam Daly 4 up.  Denis Tuohy\ Bertie Keane were 2 up unlucky not to be 3 up with Denis lipping out for a win on 9 and Tom Kenny\Gerry Keegan were equally unlucky to be 1 down turning. The final pair Tom McGrath\ Bernie O Rourke turned 3 up.  As things stood after 9 holes the overall match situation was level, the Templemore team and supporters were more upbeat and an element of doubt in the Mahon team and their large contingent of supporters was obvious.  At 11 the overall position was the same but 2 matches appeared to be heading for early wins for the home side, Bourke and Daly were 6 up and eventually won on 13th. 6th. and 5th.  After a great chip by Bernie, Tom had a putt for a win to go 5 up but much to the dismay of the home supporters and Tom himself it slipped by.  The match reached its inevitable conclusion on the 14th.  with a 5 and 4 win.  With 2 wins, Templemore were 1 up, 3 up and level on the course, things were slightly favouring the home side overall – “do we dare to dream”.  Touhy \ Keane advanced to win on the 16th.  3 and 2playing some outstanding golf.  Keely\ Purcell were unlucky not to be dormy playing the 16th. were 1 up playing the 17th.  only to lose and stood on the 18th. tee level but won on the 18th. with superb play leaving the match all square overall.  “Cometh the hour cometh the men” having trailed through 15 holes Kenny\ Keegan levelled on the 16th.  and had a great win on the 17th.  to be 1 up playing the 18th. Their team mates and supporters held their breath, could it happen!. The Mahon pair played 2 great shots and were pin high in 2 but to the left of the green. Thanks to a great approach shot by Tom the home side were on the green just past the pin, the Mahon’s pair chip was long and found the bunker to the right.  Following a great bunker shot a neat lag putt from Keegan led to a handshake giving a final result 5-0 and overall victory 6-4.  With unbridled  joy the home team and supporters celebrated and the dream had become a reality.  At the presentation of pennants in the clubhouse by Woodenbridge’s representative Paul Harte who congratulated both teams, both Mahon’s President and team manager were magnanimous in defeat and wished Templemore every success, thanked them for their sportsmanship, the superb condition of the course and the hospitality provided by Rody Cawley, Tony O’Toole and Pat O’Connell who served up the fabulous fare provided by Patricia Foley.  President Phil Ryan and team manager Liam Leahy thanked Mahon for their compliments and congratulated the team on their wonderful win, the evening concluded with the team and supporters relaxing enjoying the occasion with food supplied by Murphy’s Pub.

Finally, this great victory was celebrated by a great choral rendition of “Slievenamon”  sung by Seamus Bourke.
