A Great Start to the 2026 Golf Season in Templemore Golf Club.

22/2. Today’s Men’s and Ladies Captains’ and President’s Drive-In marked the official start of the 2026 golf season at Templemore Golf Club, and what a wonderful way to begin. With ladies and gents coming together in a one-golf-for-all scramble, the day perfectly captured the spirit of friendship, inclusivity, and enjoyment that makes our club so special.

A Drive-In is more than just the opening tee shots of the year, it’s a celebration of new beginnings, fresh ambitions, and shared enthusiasm for the season ahead. It sets the tone for months of competition, camaraderie, and memorable moments on the fairways and greens.

We wish our Captains John Greed and Michelle Hassett and President Sean Cashman every success in their year ahead and extend best wishes to all members for a fantastic, positive, and rewarding golfing year in 2026. May it be filled with good health, great company, and plenty of enjoyable golf at Templemore Golf Club.

Club President Sean Cashman.  Well folks, on the day of the Captains drive- in we had a great turnout. We were blessed with the weather, the rain held off until everyone had finished! Pat Shelly had the course in great fettle considering all the rain we have had complements to Pat.

Refreshments were served in the clubhouse afterwards. The scoring was excellent considering the soft ground condition.  1st. Team place, Declan Russell, George Collins, Kay Brennan and Michael Cahill. 2nd. Team place, Ciaran Hassett, John Kiely and Bridget Kennedy.

3rd. Team Place Martin Gleeson, Mattie Stapleton,  Sean Darcy and Marian Keely.

Congrats to all the winners & well done to all who competed and the volunteers.

But after an initial flurry of drizzle those same skies brightened, and the morning smiled on the seniors once again, as they played their usual high standard of enjoyable golf. After all the weather fluctuation the final positions looked like this, 1st place team on countback with 60 points were Timmy Tuohy, Pat O’Connell, George Collins and Jimmy Middleton.  Second team also on 60 points were Bernie O’Rourke, Frankie Shortt, Paddy Bourke and Phil Ryan Snr., and completing the podium the 3rd. Templemore Golf Club, Hon. Competition Secretary, 2026, Les Mason.

Competition secretary Appointment.

Congratulations are extended to Les Mason, former Captain 2024, and current Treasurer of the Seniors’ Clan, on his appointment to Hon. Club Competition Secretary. Les brings a wealth of experience to the role and is widely regarded as an excellent choice. His informative and well‑presented Seniors’ reports have long been appreciated, and members can now look forward to regular competition updates and summaries from both Seniors and club events. His commitment and attention to detail will be an asset to the club’s communications going forward.

Course Conditions Update

Recent weeks of unsettled, all‑season weather continue to dictate course conditions, with ground moisture levels remaining high across several parts of the course. While drainage has coped admirably in many areas, several fairways remain soft, with intermittent closures necessary to protect turf and ensure long‑term playability. These weather‑related restrictions have inevitably influenced scoring, with altered routing and temporary measures distorting the usual course par and making consistent scoring difficult. As a result, recent scorecards are not a true reflection of normal playing conditions. It should be noted that the greenkeeping team Pat Shelly and Dinny Maher worked tirelessly throughout this prolonged spell of adverse weather, implementing protective measures and maintaining playable surfaces wherever possible under challenging conditions.  Encouragingly, with longer daylight hours now arriving and a more settled spell hoped for, expectations are that conditions will steadily improve in the coming weeks. A return to full course usage should restore balance to the layout and allow scoring to normalise once ground conditions firm up. Patience remains the watchword for now, with the focus firmly on safeguarding the course so it can be enjoyed at its best as the main playing season approaches.

Outgoing Competition Sec. Tom McGrath.

My final act, thanks to all for support and patience. Best of luck to Les Mason going forward. Small number of prizes on hand. Will arrange to get them to recipients in due course.

Tom McGrath,  who throughout 2025, has demonstrated exceptional diligence and unwavering initiative in organizing a diverse range of challenging and unconventional competitions. These events not only brought out the very best in our competitive members but also significantly enhanced the club’s profile and reputation within the wider golfing community. His innovative approach has contributed to increased club funding and elevated our standing in the golfing fraternity, truly embodying the bigger picture of progress with excellence. Thank you, Tom.

PRO. Tony O’Toole.
