SPRING LEAGUE 2026

16/3Spring League Week 2 Update

There has been an outstanding response to this year’s Spring League at Templemore Golf Club, with every team now recording at least two scores. The competition is already shaping up to be one of the most lively and closely contested in recent years. Week 2 began on 16th March and will run until 22nd March. Thanks to the excellent work of the course team, players will enjoy an extended layout this week, with 13 holes in play. The format includes Holes 1 to 10, along with Holes 14, 15 and 16. Importantly, Holes 6 and 15 return to their full Par 4 status, as per the course card. All Spring League rounds are to be played from the WHITE tee markers.  Players are reminded that the WHITE tees are strictly for Spring League play only, while all casual or social rounds should be played from the GREEN tee markers.  Some score adjustments may be noticed by competitors. These were necessary because points were initially awarded on the 6th hole as a Par 4 when it was temporarily played as a Par 3. In addition, all winter competitions continue to use each golfer’s Handicap Index rounded to the nearest whole number, in line with current club practice. Full clarifications will be displayed on the whiteboard in the Men’s Locker Room, and players are encouraged to review this before playing.  Entry to the Spring League remains €20, which covers one round per week, with a €2 re-entry fee for additional attempts. Following the completion of Week 2, teams will, as tradition dictates be separated into two divisions. With Premier Division spots on the line, teams hoping to challenge for top honours are urged to get their rounds completed this week.  With fine spring weather and the course in superb condition, now is the perfect time to enjoy the competition, support your team, and make every shot count. An announcement regarding Week 3 will be released early next week.  Enjoy your golf.

Men’s Seniors.

A photograph accompanying this week’s report features Les Mason and Pat O’Connell, the dedicated pair who manage the Men’s Seniors section. Both men are widely acknowledged for their diligence, organisation, and unwavering commitment to the group. Their efficiency in running the Seniors at Templemore Golf Club has made the programme one of the most admired and successful Senior’s initiatives in any club. On behalf of all the players, sincere thanks are extended to Les and Pat for their continued work and for maintaining their remarkable ability to keep an accurate “official line” on the weather, which has proven invaluable on many occasions.

Men’s Seniors Results (19th March)

The Men’s Seniors enjoyed an unusually warm March day at Templemore Golf Club on Wednesday, as players took full advantage of the calm conditions. With the rain gear left at home and the wind easing throughout the morning, seven teams competed in what was the final week of the shortened course.  Scoring proved more modest than in previous rounds, but the competition remained tight across the board.  First place, decided on countback with 62 points, went to Tom McGrath, Bernie O’Rourke, John Egan and Seamus “Seven Pointer” Ryan.  Also finishing on 62 points, and taking second place, were Ted Kennedy, Colm Dooley, Tony O’Toole and James Murray.  In third place, with a solid score of 60 points, were Ambrose Purcell, Paddy Fogarty, George Collins and Phil Ryan Snr.  Well done to all who took part and congratulations to all for getting out to play this wonderful game. You are the the prize-winners.

Spring League Call‑Out to Rally the Troops.

16/3. Week 1 of the Spring League wrapped up on Sunday the 15th, and what a start it was! Despite the shortened course and the testing weather, the scoring was impressively high and the spirit on the fairways was even higher. A huge well done to the hardy golfers who braved the conditions and got their teams off to a strong beginning. But now the real message goes out to everyone,

Your team needs you. Every point matters. And every golfer counts. If you couldn’t make the first round, don’t worry.

If you haven’t swung a club in weeks, now’s the time. If your team is relying on a push this is your moment. This league is not just about low scores, it’s about participation, support, and camaraderie. Even one single point could be the difference between a team climbing the leaderboard or slipping behind. That one point might come from you. So, dust off the clubs, grab your raingear if needed, and get out there. Show up for your team, your club, and the great spirit of the Spring League. Let’s make Week 2 our best turnout yet. Each week best scores will also be a singles competition that can be entered by members not entered for the league, domestic cuts will apply in this but not in the league. Good luck all Let’s make it a Spring League to remember.

Results Corner.

8/3. Another good competition entry for the 11-hole Stableford that ran from the 28th February to the 8th March, as many members warmed up for the spring league. The scoring was high due to the shortened course, and the result was influenced by countback and domestic cuts. All three podium places had a score of 30 points.
1st. Bernie O’Rourke, 2nd. Jerry Keegan Jnr. and 3rd. Pat Looby well played everyone.

The inter club season is likely to kick off as usual with the J B Carr Diamond Trophy, it’s an annual inter‑club matchplay competition for golfers aged 60 and over. It was inaugurated in 1996 by Woodenbridge Golf Club and has since grown into what is widely regarded as the Senior Club Championship of Ireland, with around 200 golf clubs from across the country taking part. The draw has selected Templemore Golf Club away to Ballykisteen by 19th April. It will not be an easy task, so time to dust the sticks down lads !!

Men’s Seniors.

11/3. Who said you can’t teach old dog’s new tricks last week we moved the normal Thursday to Wednesday morning this week we moved to Wednesday afternoon, and to both weeks we got a great response. The weather was a little drizzly but better than predicted for the normal slot greeted the seven teams. The scoring was good with the 1st. team on 61 points scrapped in on count back was Sean Cashman, Pat O’Connell, John Stapleton and Phil Ryan Snr. In 2nd. also on 61 points were Bernie O’Rourke, Sean Darcy, Mick Murphy and Chrisy O’Rourke. In 3rd. with 59 points was Frank Russell, Colm Dooley, Frankie Shortt and Jim Casey. Well, played all. Let’s see what next week weather brings.
