The Golf year started earlier this year with the Drive-in occurring in January. The sun shone as outgoing Lady Captain Sara passed on the mantle to Lorraine Ryan our Lady Captain for 2019. Mary Hogan took on the responsibility of Lady President and together with Captain Tony and President Mick tee’d off to begin our golfing year.
In February we started the Spring League. This is always a great event to get us all back on the course. It ran over a 4 week period and following great efforts Ann Kenny, Breda O Carroll and Bernie Stapleton emerged as winners.
Teams started their Journeys in April, the Minor team were defeated by Sliabh an mBan and the Challenge team by Youghal on a horrifically wet day in Cahir Park. The Boyne trophy team had their first outing around this time also. They progressed right throughout the summer eventually reaching the all-Ireland semi-finals in this event. Unfortunately they were very narrowly beaten in Edenderry, but for such a small club this was a wonderful achievement and it was so close that one putt could have seen us in the final. Later in the year we also reached the semi-finals in the Tipperary league with the last match going down the 21st against Cahir Park GC but once again luck was not on our side. The mixed team also reached the semi-final of the Diageo beaten very narrowly by Thurles.
The weekly competitions continued throughout the season with senior/beginners nine hole on Monday afternoons and 18 hole competitions on Tuesdays. The highlight of these of course is the Lady Captain’s and Lady President’s prizes. Sadie Tynan won Lady Captain Lorraine’s beautiful prize with Noreen Whelan winning the senior/beginners section. Our Lady President Mary Hogan presented a beautiful prize which was won by Mary Hayes Kenny, Anna Russell won the senior’s prize on President’s day.
The Social mixed continued on Wednesday evenings from May until September where we play a nine hole scramble followed by tea and sandwiches. This is a most popular event and brings the ladies and gents club together and is suitable for members at all levels of golf.
We must be in a unique position in the Golf Clubs in Ireland this year as our outgoing Lady Captain Sara gave birth to baby Ava in July and Lady Captain Lorraine welcomed baby Caragh in September, huge congratulations to both! It’s nice that ye are looking after the future of Lady’s Golf in Templemore! We also congratulate Mary Hayes on her marriage to Joe Kenny, we all enjoyed seeing the beautiful transformation of their home with Dermot Bannon on Room to Improve We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors and to thank Captain Tony and all the crew who tirelessly give of their time to keep the course in such great order.
